Just to point out by before FDR Congress did hold most of the power in Washington. That's why presidents had to really appeal to the majority in order to accomplish their goals and also why presidents like John Adams and his John Quincy Adams were unable to achieve most of their goals. Personally I've been thinking for years that the presidency has been honestly abusing power. Each president s would grab a bit more power until here we are.

I was going to mention this too, you beat me too it!

Random thought for my military thriller audience research only.

If a main character was acting against a governing body in a modern world... the car isn't the only thing that could track them. Any and all wifi connected devices could be tracked (phones, smart watches, FitBits, GPS devices, etc) by a person trying to. You'd have to go old school to avoid this, and get burner phones paid for in cash. Those would be limited use phones and constantly replaced.

Also, I've said it once and I'll say it again, study the Troubles of Ireland. Lots to learn from there... for your main character. In your book. Totally fictional. Research.

Just in case you too are writing books.

You know, in case the Alphabet s watching!

Burner phones are a no go. They keep the video for burner purchases forever. Especially with cash pay. If you want to be futuristic about it, you'd have to go with an open source hardware phone and proxy-purchased pre-pay sim cards or something.... would be willing to discuss, but there's almost no way to escape metadata monitoring unless you're on the monitoring team.

Thank you, what do you recommend for an idiot proof comm system?

Expand full comment

I guess it depends what you mean by idiot-proof.

short range digital radio would be your dumbest and probably best bet, but again it really depends what you're trying to avoid. we can talk about this via email or online call if you want. probably easier than using comments on the hand stack.

I was being very general, since I am not in the place for this level of prep yet. I generically assumed digital was easily trackable. Maybe we could start getting Chaos Actual to get guests on who are experts in various fields to address these micro topic for prepping.

Any good books for research?

Also remember all cameras are accessible to someone.

I have a lot of the infantry field manuals from my time in the Army. But I need to get more of these reference books.

Your protagonist may need to consider short-range communication, like walkie talkies.

That is good to know, and get quality or they don't last.

My sister-in-law was on a government program when she graduated from med school back in the 80's that if she would work in a poor underserved community she would have her loans forgiven if she would work two years there. Her loans were in the hundred's of thousands of dollarsand she was terrified she would never be able to pay them back so she thought that was good deal. She was all set to go to an Indian reservation in Arizona when 2 weeks before she was to leave they reclassified that reservation and TOLD her she would have to go somewhere else even though her new husband was working in Phoenix. She went to the reservation anywhere and fought them for 4 years and finally won. This was in the 80's. The Government even then is more ruthless and uncaring now than back then. So that video of the doctors and nurses commenting on the vaccine and the fear they feel is not to be ignored. It's real. And the government powers will stomp on them. That whistleblower nurse is a gutsy hero.

Snagged a couple of pairs of Magpul core breach gloves on clearance a few years ago. Not for tacticool stuff. Mainly used them for clearing brush and running a chain saw but they held up great. Had a couple seams bust and wore a hole in the first pair this year. I guess they were discontinued but you can find some for sale fairly cheap if you dig around.

Oh freaking great.. Now CNN is saying the term "Do your own Research" is dangerous for you and they try to tie it to a smallpox outbreak in the 19th century.. Like folks were out saying imma look that up in the library. What the actual hell. So sad usual critical thinking it's BAD!

Good point about the boots! I wear steel toes all day, and love my RedWings. Not "assault" boots, but have held up running all over the high plains on hunting trips.

But you MUST be comfortable in your footwear. A lot of "light" boots are to light for me. Decades in heavy boots have me craving heavy boots. But they are not the best for running.

For socks, go thicker than you think. I would rather feel a bit hot (extra socks!) than have blisters.

For heavy wear (longer hikes), I always do thin inner and heavier outer.

Good point, and one I forgot to be honest. Another layer helps a lot.

Good boots are very important for obvious reasons. 20 plus years in the infantry taught me that. Tried the Oakley’s but my go to is Garmont NFS.

do the oakley boots run true to size? also light assault vs field assault? field-a too hefty for the desert?

I was actually looking at the sketchers Burgin Tarlac lately. not quite an assault boot but water/electrical resistant with hard toe.

we are also in process of figuring out primary & secondary lighting. not something i had ever considered before this year. nods and hardhats are a long way off, but i figure might as well get night lights with the covid bonus payments.

still freaks me out how scared some (young, helathy) people are of this non-dangerous disease.

Lots of people I know in my age bracket (30-35) are absolutely paranoid. Yet I know of young people (early twenties) and elderly (70+) who are absolutely based about this!

Nick, what would you recommend for colder weather? Living in Florida, I don't see a lot of freezing weather, but it does show up occasionally. What's best for gear: pants, shirts, thermal, etc.?
