Also I’m pretty sure I’m going to introduce Red Dawn to the family tonight. The one from the 80’s….you know when they made good movies.

Making sweet and sour potato salad, smoking ribs and cheesy corn, enjoying the beautiful weather and requesting the help of St Judas Thaddeus and GOD to help this country back to principles it was founded on.

Didn’t know if I would be home for the fourth, got in late last night, leaving again tomorrow. Trying to do as much as I can with the family during my 34 hour reset. The smoker is looking at me pretty upset, but the guns just put away in the closet are happy.

Grilling burgers and brats and watching the kids and cousins all swim together the entire afternoon. Followed by some lost arm hair and maybe eyebrows burning some money.

Having a pleasant day with family members, watching The Cheap Detective with Peter Falk on Tubi, and determinedly not talking about politics. Tubi > Netflix by the way.

It's a mash up of Bogart movies like Casablanca and Maltese Falcon that still manages to have a comprehensible plot. Ironically I first watched it before watching the movies it spoofs.

Tubi outclassed Netflix by leaps and bounds.

I walked the dogs, went to the gym, got some chores to catch up on. Got some burgers and dogs for later. Mundane? Yes, because I live in the greatest country ever and for that I am eternally grateful. Freedom.

Well church is over. And in a couple of hours we will go over to my daughter's house and swim in there pool with 3 of my grandkids. Then BBQ burgers, dogs, grilled corn on the cob, my wife's famous world renowned macaroni salad, tossed salad, assorted junk foods, ice cold diced seedless watermelon and then of course finish it all off with s'mores and my wife's world famous and renowned chocolate, Peanut butter chocolate chip rasin oatmeal cookies. A campfire singalong will commence and then FIREWORKS. Of course we will say grace and pray for America.

Nick, you referenced a Revolutionary War captain stating, "We had always been free, and we intended to remain free." It's a great quote! My wife is a college history teacher, and she would like to use this quote in her online classes this summer. Do remember the name of the man who said it?

Men of Property

Sometime around 1843, a young man named Mellen Chamberlain interviewed Levi Preston, an aging veteran of the American Revolution. Then ninety-one years old, Preston had been in his early twenties in 1775 when British soldiers marched out of Boston to search for arms and rebels in nearby Concord, Massachusetts. "What made you go to the Concord Fight?" Chamberlain wanted to know. "Young man," replied Preston, "what we meant in going for those Redcoats was this: we had always governed ourselves and we always meant to." For Levi Preston, it was just that simple. As a white, Christian man of property, he had controlled his own life before the Revolution, and he had no intention of allowing Parliament or British soldiers to change it.

For men like Levi Preston, the American Revolution confirmed their status as autonomous citizens of an enlightened state. In the decades preceding the Revolution, they enjoyed political, social, and economic autonomy, though it was often based on custom rather than law. The Revolution changed everything by replacing the unwritten British constitution, and its traditional liberties, with written constitutions explicitly stating the rights men like Preston had long enjoyed. For them, the Revolution brought a confirmation of their liberty.

That's an awesome story! I'll share this with her so she can incorporate it into her class. Thanks!

On a side note, there's a slight chance that I'm related to this Levi Preston. We share that surname, and I know I have an ancestor who served under General Washington. Thanks again!
